Son of Edgar Charles Mileham, and of Erna Gladys Irene Mileham, of Boxmoor, Hertfordshire

Denys Mileham was born in December 1919, and grew up in Boxmoor at Old Fishery House.  He attended Berkhamsted school and joined the RAF Volunteer reserve in 1938.  When war broke out he was mobilised, initially flying Lysanders which were used for taking messages, dropping passengers off and reconnaissance.  In July 1940 he was transferred to Spitfires in 41 Squadron and took part in the Battle of Britain.  In March 1942 he was posted as a Flight Commander to 234 Squadron.  On 15th April 1942 his squadron set out to escort a bombing raid on Cherbourg. On the return journey two planes were shot down over the Channel, including the one flown by Denys.
